If numerical simulations were initially used just to assess the correct behavior of a component, nowadays the design phase can be CAE-driven thanks to optimization: it is a recent discipline capable to face very different issues.

The topological optimization, used in a pre-design phase, allows to determine the best material distribution, provided boundary conditions and loads.

Shape optimization allows to change an existing component in order to improve its performance, having all variables admitted under control.

Parametric optimization i suseful to determine material and thickness that suite best a particular component.

The combined use of these techniques allows to analyze various scenarios (also thanks to DOE and robust design techniques), feasibility, correlate experimental data and get the best solution reducing the time necessary for the design phase, so to reduce time-to-market.
